The Palace of Discovery
The Palais de la Découverte is one of the most emblematic scientific establishments in Paris. Located in the west wing of the Grand Palais, on Franklin D. Roosevelt Avenue, it was inaugurated in 1937 on the occasion of the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques. Its founder, the physicist Jean Perrin, Nobel Prize in Physics, wanted to create a place where science would be accessible to all, through demonstration and curiosity. For more than 80 years, this museum has been distinguished by its unique mission: to make science understood through direct experience. Rather than a static museum filled with showcases, the Palais de la Découverte offers live experiments, live manipulations and demonstrations led by real scientific mediators. It is aimed as much at children as at adults, at those who want to learn as at those who like to marvel.
A place of experiences and discoveries for all
One of the charms of the Palais de la Découverte lies in its interactive philosophy. Here, we don’t just look: we participate, we touch, we observe the phenomena in action. Each room addresses a scientific discipline, and each experience aims to arouse curiosity rather than simply transmit knowledge. The demonstrations are carried out live, often with humor and pedagogy. Visitors can attend an electrostatic experiment, observe the formation of an electric arc, follow a spectacular chemical reaction, or even manipulate optical instruments. Children, amazed, discover that science can be a fascinating game, while adults rediscover the pleasure of learning.
Physics and chemistry staged
The physics rooms are among the most popular in the museum. We explore the laws of gravitation, magnetic forces, fluid mechanics and electricity through spectacular experiments. Demonstrations on lightning, sound waves or lasers are all opportunities to make visible often abstract phenomena. As for chemistry, visitors witness colorful reactions, controlled explosions and amazing transformations of matter. Each experiment highlights the rigor of scientific reasoning while arousing a real wonder. These interactive presentations, led by passionate researchers, transform science into a living spectacle.
Astronomy and the Planetarium, a trip to the stars
One of the most fascinating spaces of the Palais de la Découverte is undoubtedly the Planetarium. Installed in a semi-dark room, it invites you to a journey to the heart of the cosmos. Thanks to a state-of-the-art projector, spectators discover the constellations, the movements of the planets, the birth of the stars and the mysteries of the universe. Conferences and guided sessions are organized every day, allowing to understand astronomical phenomena: eclipses, comets, black holes or space exploration. It is a place of contemplation and learning, where we become aware of the tiny but fascinating place of the Earth in the immensity of the cosmos. Visitors can also discover ancient astronomical observation instruments and trace the history of French astronomy, from the work of Cassini to those of Laplace.
Mathematics, between logic and imagination
Often feared, mathematics takes on a completely different dimension here. The Palais de la Découverte dedicates several amazing rooms to them where numbers, shapes and probabilities become tools for play and reflection. Visitors can manipulate geometric models, solve puzzles or experiment with logic through interactive puzzles. One of the great successes of the museum is the Pi room, entirely dedicated to the famous mathematical constant. A huge panel displays more than a million digits of Pi, a symbol of infinity and the abstract beauty of mathematics. This mixture of art, science and imagination reminds us that mathematics is not just a matter of equations, but a way of understanding the world and perceiving its hidden harmonies.
Life and Earth sciences
The Discovery Palace also devotes a large place to biology, geology and life sciences. The exhibitions make it possible to explore the functioning of the human body, the structure of DNA, biodiversity or even terrestrial ecosystems. Visitors can attend live microscopy experiments, observe cells or understand the mechanisms of evolution. Educational workshops also make it possible to address current topics such as genetics, the environment or climate change, in a clear and accessible language. This space highlights how modern science is interested not only in physical laws, but also in the complexity of living things and the preservation of the planet.
A remarkable architectural and cultural heritage
Beyond its scientific content, the Discovery Palace also impresses with its monumental architecture. Installed in the Grand Palais, a masterpiece of glass and steel architecture from the early xxᵉ century, it offers a majestic setting for human curiosity. Natural light floods the galleries, highlighting the instruments and experimental installations. The atmosphere of the place mixes elegance and enthusiasm: a “Belle Époque” spirit at the service of progress and knowledge. Visitors feel both the weight of history and the vitality of contemporary scientific research.
A place on the move and looking to the future
Faithful to its original vocation, the Palais de la Découverte continues to evolve. Temporarily closed for renovation and modernization as part of the renovated Grand Palais project, it is about to reopen with redesigned spaces, immersive technologies and a scenography adapted to the public of the xxiᵉ century. Its ambition remains the same: to make science alive, accessible and exciting for all. By combining heritage, innovation and pedagogy, the Palais de la Découverte remains a unique place where knowledge becomes an adventure, and where every visitor, regardless of age, finds the wonder of understanding the world.
